Certain oxygen and nitogen molecules are highly reactive and can damage cells. They are called reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) molecules.

Normal cell processes handle ROS and RNS molecules, but over production of ROS and RNS exceed the body's natural defense mechanisms. Oxidative damage occurs and can cause cells to fail.

Oxidative stress is also caused by other factors such as pollution, smoke, inflammation, UV light, some drugs and other sources.

Oxidative stress also increases as we age.

One of the major antioxidant enzymes that protect cells is glutathione peroxidase (GPx). With the right kind of alchemy garbage can be turned into gold.

N-Viro International Corporation converts waste to energy.

Here is some technical mumbo jumbo describing how that process works from their website.

The N-Viro technologies involve the mixing of municipal bio solids with specific alkaline waste products from the coal combustion electric generation (making clean coal), cement and lime industries. This process stabilizes organic waste thru pasteurization and complete disinfection.

Our suite of green technologies complement each other and build upon a unique concept transforming waste products into a beneficial fertilizer or ultimately creating N-Viro Fuel a renewable alternative energy fuel perfectly synergistic with the coal combustion industry.

N-Viro develops and licenses its technology to municipalities and private companies. Their patented processes use lime and/or mineral-rich, combustion byproducts to treat, pasteurize, immobilize and convert wastewater sludge and other bio-organic wastes into biomineral agricultural and soil-enrichment products with real market value.

The company has generated sales in excess of $40 million dollars, since its initial public offering in October of 1993, which was underwritten by Robertson Stephens, Raymond James, Oppenheimer & Co., and Paine Webber.

They are active in Florida and have taken over the Volusia County facility in Daytona, which processes solids into soil from many places in Central Florida.

April-May Boston area Vegetarian Express Cooking Classes on the East Coast

Boston Area Vegetarian

--------------------------------------------------
From: "les_mail" leslie@lesliecerier.com

*Spring has sprung and it is very sweet. For example, on the bill is a charge for the MRI, but possibly the
charge for the doctor reading the MRI is still to come.
The bill has one charge after another for $220, $265, $384 and so on, which add up.
There are big charges like $1,470 for observation, which I believe is a way of keeping the charges down by not admitting her as an
overnight patient. Think they say she was only there for 23 hours so they can call it observation instead of charging her for a
stay.
Emer dept level 5 for $2,365.
MRI T-spine w/o cont for $1,917.75.
EKG tracing only for $500, three times for $1,500.
There is no explanation of what these things are, why they were done or what they found out. A little web research would probably
turn up some detail about each one, but I do not feel like doing that right now.
What was wrong with my mother?
Back spasms.
There is a Medicare Op Cy of -$9,543.60, which appears to be a reduction of the charges because of Medicare.
Mcare Op Nd Pmt of $918.93 appears to be what Medicare paid.
There is a B C Payment ND of $293.47, which must be the Blue Cross payment.
There is an Abn Wo Op of -$485.75 which looks to be some other reduction.
The hospital was paid a total of $1,212.40, other than from my mother.
That made the total adjustments -$10,029.35, so my mother only paid $76.25 of this particular bill.
The hospital bill then was $1,212.40 plus $76.25, which is $1,288.65.
This is disturbing, for many reasons.
First, they should just charge you the $1,288.65, if that is the bill.
Second, $1,288.65 is a lot for back spasms, even if they did do tests to rule out other stuff.
The problem is the medical field does not do business with their patients. They service their patients, but do business with
insurance companies.
If the medical field did business with their patients, they could only charge what their patients could afford to pay.
Other businesses operate that way. The car industry sells cars with $250,000 worth of parts for $15,000. They figured out how to do
it.
The computer industry figured out how to put a super computer on everyone's desk for $500.
The power industry figured out how to wire up the entire country and deliver energy to everyone's house for a few hundred dollars a
month.
The medical industry should be able to figure out how to do an EKG for under $500? The auto industry plugs a few sensors into a car
and does diagnostics for $50. What is the difference? Put some sensors on your body and run a computer program. It could tell you a
lot of information.
Other industries have competitive forces driving prices down.
The medical industry is like a scam. Everything is obfusticated. The target of the scam, the patient, is preyed on through their
vulnerabilites. The scam is driven by fear, fear of bankruptcy and fear of illness.
This is a sneaky way to get the maximum money out of people by lawyers, insurance companies, the medical industry and politicians.
It is not that they do not have valuable services to provide, but the way many of those services are provided in regards to today's
medical industry is to me a lot like a moving company scam.
They terrify you with a bill of $11,318. Obviously no normal person can pay that. Therefore you must have insurance. Now you are out
of the equation and the lawyers, insurance companies, medical industry and politicians decide how to divide up your money.
The solution is to get rid of insurance for most things and let the medical industry deal directly with their patients for normal
medical care. They will figure out how to charge what people can afford.
Once we do that, then there are three other things to deal with:
1. People who cannot afford to pay for normal medical care.
2. Large costs that are likely to affect a large percentage of people, such as end-of-life care.
3. Extreme costs that are likely to affect only a few people, such as trauma or rare diseases.
4. Liability lawsuits
By shrinking the healthcare problems to these four areas, the problem becomes more manageable and solutions easy to find. There are
food stamps. There could be healthcare stamps.
End-of-life care could be part of a normal life insurance policy. Instead of getting paid when you die, you get paid when you need
end-of-life care.
Extreme costs are what insurance is for.
The government involvement could be a safety net for those that fall through.

Why we fall asleep after eating

My question was why do I fall asleep after eating?
After reading all the previous articles, it seems the question should by why do we stay awake?
Biologically it seems we stay awake to eat and do the other activities that are needed to allow us to procreate and raise the next
generation to pass on our genes.
When we are hungry, a cell in our brain releases a chemical orexins (plus who knows what else) that keeps us alert so we can get
food.
Sugar blocks those cells from producing orexins. Hope you're doing well.

This morning I decided I'd expand my circle of contacts and pass on to you some of the links I have found interesting or somehow
useful regarding the new H1N1 flu.

Some of you probably already have plenty of information about the flu from the media and your own institutions, and some already
know of this flutrackers.com website, which is visited and contributed to by medical personnel around the globe. So, this might not
be much of a contribution to your tools and knowledge.

Anyhow, today's site has contributions form infection control staff in medical facilities, which to me is a indicator of the way in
which CDC/Gov/medical institutions are handling the pandemic and consequently, us the public. But also thought it might be useful
to you as a resource on specifics related to you or your family or work place. If you are new to flutrackers.com, note that
"Florida1" is the username of the administrator. I kind of follow his/her lead as he or she seems to be pretty sensible,
non-sensationalist and strikes me as very knowledgeable.

Two of the most informative threads to me this AM were:

http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=120892 Emergency symptoms.
http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=120753 On incubation periods

Or this one, the main NEW POSTINGS site on several topics/up dated (medically related) info re H1N1.
http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=1531

Two other interesting threads were on the effect of vitamin D and one on asthma. Seems vitamin D might help mitigate symptoms. Let
me know if you come across confirmation of these ideas from legitimate sources.

Reading the emergency thread it occurred to me that many of us have probably never discussed our medical preferences in case of
emergency. I've been thinking about this a lot, considering my medical care preferences in case of severe illness. Yup, some of
which may require immediate use of extraordinary measures (like very invasive procedures) from resuscitation, to intubation for
breathing and cardiac support, to extra corporeal oxygenation of the blood (like a form of dialysis discussed in the new postings of
flutrackers) that help the lungs and heart while they recover. Recovery from these procedures is lengthy, the shortest being a few
weeks but too often lasting months and sometimes years. Sometimes there is not recovery. What decisions would you consider making?
What would you like done or not done to you? What if you had to decide on DISconnecting a loved one from a support system like
this? Just some food for thought.

I was enlightened this week by a YouTube on how to wash hands properly. However, the overwhelming majority of the demos are
incorrect. This one was the best I found. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYwypSLiaTU because of how it illustrates the finger
rubbing techniques, the duration and how to turn off the faucets. Just remember to touch nothing else in the bathroom with your
bare hands before you leave the sink/bathroom to go to your next task; otherwise you just nicely recontaminated your hands. In
public places I use a foot, or a clean paper towel to turn the knob or hold the handle and push the door open with the paper,
disposing of the towel outside the bathroom if necessary, making sure not to handle it any further before I get rid of it. At home
I clean door knobs regularly.

And just for kicks, this is one is on IMPROPER hand washing by a nurse instructor who thinks she is doing it correctly
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SG1uui3hslA&NR=1&feature=fvwp. Do not wash like this.

Happy reading, and stay well. As always, let me know if you want NOT to receive this kind of emails. My purpose is only to keep me
informed about the flu, understand what I can, and stay healthy for as long as I can. In the process, I've thought of people who
might find this kind of stuff useful in some way, and is why you just got this note.

Orexins and Sugar - Sleep after lunch

A cell in the brain releases orexins that keeps people alert.
Sugar can block these cells from producing orexin.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/5037720.stm

Norepinephrine warns brain is out of fuel

Norepinephrine was previously known to operate as a stress hormone as well as a neurotransmitter that plays a role in mood
regulation and other physical processes. Milk contains tryptophan, an essential amino acid that is among the natural dietary sleep inducers.
Tryptophan works by increasing the amount of serotonin, a natural sedative, in the brain. This is why so many folk remedies include
warm milk with a teaspoonful of honey, a simple sugar. (Carbohydrates facilitate the entry of tryptophan into the brain.) A turkey
sandwich provides another sleep-inducing combination of tryptophan and carbohydrates. A banana with milk gives you vitamin B6, which
helps convert tryptophan to serotonin.
http://www.rd.com/living-healthy/sleep-and-diet-eating-to-sleep-well/article29172.html

Sugar-sensitive people generally have a family history of alcoholism and are very fond of sweet foods and carbohydrates.

People with normal body chemistries experience the opiate effect of eating sugars as simply a pleasant feeling. For sugar-sensitive
people, this pleasant feeling can become a drug-like euphoria, which is powerful enough to create a strong attachment to the food or
drink producing the effect. Research into neurochemistry suggests the reason may be that the sugar-sensitive personality appears to
have a dysfunction in two separate, but connected, biological systems that affect emotions and behavior. These dysfunctions include
a lowered level of serotonin functioning and an augmented response to beta-endorphin within the reward systems of the brain
(Gianoulakis, Krishnan, and Thavundayil, 1996). The consequences of these separate disturbances are both physiological and
psychological.
http://web.winltd.com/Article.aspx?PageURL=/Pages/English/healthnews/sugarconnection.htm

What to eat at each meal to keep memory and brain functioning

Many people realize the harm the alcohol can do to our brain, but only a few know the danger of a lunch that consists of three or
more dishes containing carbohydrates: bread, potatoes or pasta, sweet desserts. A group of psychologists discovered that similar
combinations of products make women sleepy and men weak. After such a lunch, it takes about four hours to fully restore persons'
ability to concentrate. You've probably heard the joke: "Up until lunch, a person at work fights hunger and after lunch, sleep."
Sleepiness may not be the result of a bad night of sleep. Sleepiness is often caused by an incorrectly chosen combination of food
that reduces the activity of the brain.
What should you eat for lunch then? Lunch should contain products with a high amount of protein. Poultry or fish rich in protein
fill the blood of a person with amino acids, including tyrosine.
Let me also share a few words about the protective barrier of nervous cells of the brain. Each cell of the organism has an external
membrane - a protective cover which not only separates the cell from other parts of the organism, but also serves as the transmitter
of various substances. Through the membrane, the active withdrawal of harmful by-products of vital cellular activity is carried out.
Many cells of the brain possess a double membrane; not every chemical substance can penetrate into the nervous system. Physicians,
who are well-informed about these processes, invented a special way for the introduction of medicinal substances directly into the
nervous system - the subarachnoid way. Some substances enter into the brain only by means of their direct injection into nervous
cells. What is it that prevents those substances from reaching the nervous system? It is the double protective membrane that does
it. The mechanism that protects the brain from chemical substances is called a "blood-brain barrier."
Tyrosine easily flows through this protective filter in the brain and turns into chemical elements which help to increase brain
activity - dopamine and norepinephrine.
When you suddenly feel confused, helpless, or depressed, it should serve as an indicator of deficiency of these elements in your
brain.
Meat, fish, an egg yolk, porridge, peanuts, and soy products contain a nutritious element called choline, which also freely
penetrates through the blood-brain barrier. Choline is the chemical predecessor of the neurotransmitter of the brain, acetylcholine,
which plays an important role in the development of memory.
http://www.pmemory.com/articles/food_to_improve_memory.php

Sleeps Role In Forming Memories

Sort transient brain events, called "sharp wave ripples," are responsible for consolidating memory and transferring the learned
information from the hippocampus to the neocortex, where long-term memories are stored.
Sharp wave ripples are intense, compressed oscillations that occur in the hippocampus when the hippocampus is working "off-line,"
most often during stage four sleep, which, along with stage three, is the deepest level of sleep.
During stage four sleep, Buzsaki explains, "it's as if many instruments and members of the orchestra come together to generate a
loud sound, a sound so loud that it is heard by wide areas of the neocortex. These sharp, 'loud' transient events occur hundreds to
thousands of times during sleep and 'teach' the neocortex to form a long-term form of the memory, a process referred to as memory
consolidation." The intensity and multiple occurrence of those ripples also explain why certain events may only take place once in
the waking state and yet can be remembered for a lifetime, adds Buzsaki.
http://www.impactlab.com/2009/09/16/direct-evidence-of-role-of-sleep-in-memory-formation-is-uncovered/

Foods That Feed Your Brain

Eating more of these foods -- you are certain to remember so much more. Past anatomical studies have shown that these cells in the lateral
hypothalamus also project to adjacent reward-associated areas of the brain.

This study suggests that orexin may be a factor in modulating reward-seeking characteristic of substance abuse. AWAKE -- Brain cells that produce
histamine and norepinephrine are active during waking. PARTLY ASLEEP -- In cataplexy, a semisleep state in which muscle tone is lost
but arousal maintained, histamine levels are normal; norepinephrine is reduced. When our bodies have burned up the food in our stomachs and our blood
sugar and insulin levels begin to drop, ghrelin communicates with the hypothalamus in the brain. The hypothalamus, housed in the
deep center portion of our brain cavity, regulates our basic body functions such as thirst, sleep and sex drive. Once it receives
the message, delivered by ghrelin, that we need to eat something to keep our bodies running, the hypothalamus triggers the release
of neuropeptide Y, which stimulates our appetites.
http://health.howstuffworks.com/food-craving.htm/printable

A banana a day keeps the doctor away

Got this email today about the health benefits of bananas, which I eat regularly. Have no idea if it is true.
----------
Go Bananas
----------
Never, put your banana in the refrigerator. [Why?]
This is interesting.
After reading this, you'll never look at a banana in the same way again..
Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and
substantial boost of energy.
Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the
number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.
But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses
and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.
Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after
eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make
you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.
PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.
Anemia : High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.
Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure.
So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability
to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.
Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school ( England ) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas
at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist
learning by making pupils more alert.
Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem
without resorting to laxatives.
Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the
stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.
Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing
relief.
Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness
Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many
people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.
Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food
like chocolate and chips... Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in
high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by
snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady..
Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the
only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation
by coating the lining of the stomach.
Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature
of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.
Smoking &Tobacco Use: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and
magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.
Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water
balance.. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the
help of a high-potassium banana snack.
Strokes: According to research in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of
death by strokes by as much as 40%!
Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the
wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!
So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the
carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also
rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A
banana a day keeps the doctor away!"
Pass it on to your friends
PS: Bananas must be the reason monkeys are so happy all the time! I will add one here; want a quick shine on our shoes?? Take the
INSIDE of the banana skin, and rub directly on the shoe...polish with dry cloth. Amazing fruit.

Apparently without the chemical to keep us awake, we get sleepy.
Avoid sugar and stay hungry if you want to stay alert.

Fats and nutrition

Here is an interesting write up on fats and nutrition.
http://www.treelight.com/health/nutrition/OilsAndEFAs.html

Salmon made me sleepy

Was alert, clear headed and filled a morning of energetic work. Snacked on almonds and raisons.
Went downstairs, made a fresh salad and had a piece of seasoned salmon. Had an
appoint and went there cloudy headed.
Do not know if it was the salmon or the seasoning.
Refined carbohydrates are not the only culprit.
Have been eating organic as much as possible to limit the chemicals that might be clouding my mind.
Thomas Edison avoided eating during the day for the same reason. Levy, MD
The epidemiological (population) data thus far indicates that those who get sickest from Swine flu and those who succumb to it are
predominantly 20-40 years old. Twenty to forty year olds are the same group which most frequently succumbed during the brief SARS
epidemic, as well as the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918-1919.
A theory to explain why young, healthy individuals are more likely to succumb to these viruses is that it the cause of death is not
the virus itself, but rather an immune response to a foreign virus which leads to excess inflammation and what is labeled as
'systemic inflammatory response syndrome.' If this theory is correct, and I believe it is, it follows logically that an
anti-inflammatory diet may protect against death from Swine flu.
Many Westerners eat a diet considered pro-inflammatory. This is considered a part of the reason for the rising incidence of many
chronic conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, coronary heart disease.
The general principles of an anti-inflammatory diet are to eat whole foods rather than processed food and 'fast food,' and to eat a
wide variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, and whole grains. With regard to carbohydrate intake, one should maximize
dietary fiber intake, and minimize intake of high glycemic index foods and minimize intake of refined grains. With regard to fat
intake, one should avoid all trans fats, limit intake of saturated fat, consume plentiful amounts of mono-unsaturated fat, and
plentiful amounts of foods with omega 3 fats. Good sources of monounsaturated fat include olive oil (preferably extra-virgin) and a
variety of nuts and seeds. Fatty fish, such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring, tunafish, and trout are rich dietary sources of
omega 3 fat.
With regard to protein intake, fatty fish, nuts and seeds, and legumes are all excellent sources of protein, and also excellent
sources of either omega 3 fat, monounsaturated fat, and/or fiber, all mentioned above as important elements of the anti-inflammatory
diet. Intake of poultry and red meat should be limited, or restricted to pasture fed poultry and cows. Pasture fed animals graze on
the grass, whereas most animals (including organic meat and poultry) are fed an unnatural diet consisting mostly of corn and soy.
Corn and soy are omega 6 fatty acids, found not only in meat but also in many processed foods. Optimal health is dependent upon a
balanced intake of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, and the Standard American Diet (SAD) contains far too much omega 6 fatty acids
and far too little omega 3 fatty acids, and this likely contributes to a pro-inflammatory state in the body. Pasture fed meat
contains higher quantities of omega 3 fatty acids and lower quantities of omega 6 fatty acids, compared to 'ordinary' meat. Bison is
rich in omega 3 fat, as bison cannot be raised in close quarters like cows, and thus all bison are pasture fed (some bison are
topped off with corn and soy just prior to slaughter, as this practice creates meat more similar to cow meat and thus more palatable
to many Westerners).
A superb summary of the anti-inflammatory diet can be found in Appendix A of the book Healthy Aging, by Andrew Weil, MD (2005). A
more detailed narrative on healthy nutrition is posted on my web site, www.sanfordlevymd.com.
Based on the theory that an overactive immune response to certain viruses such as Swine flu triggers excess inflammation which can
lead to death, the dietary supplements most likely to be beneficial are those that reduce inflammation and those that modulate
immune response rather than stimulating it (a caveat is that an individual with a suppressed immune system due to AIDS or
prescription corticosteroids would probably benefit from immune stimulating supplements).
The primary anti-inflammatory supplement is fish oil, and specifically the EPA in the fish oil. Barry Sears, PhD, author of The
Anti-Inflammation Zone, states in this book that healthy adults should consume 2.5 grams of EPA + DHA in supplement form daily. I
believe that a healthy individual eating an anti-inflammatory diet needs only 1 gram per day of EPA +DHA, derived from either food
or fish oil supplementation. Flax oil is an omega 3 oil, but the molecule is 18 carbon atoms in length, and must be converted to
EPA, 20 carbon atoms in length, in order to have an anti-inflammatory effect. Published studies indicate that only 5-20% of alpha
linoleic acid in flax is converted in the human body to EPA, and thus flax does not have nearly the same anti-inflammatory effect as
fish oil. The percentage of alpha linoleic acid in flax which is converted to EPA will vary from person to person, and an
understanding of the biochemical pathways in the body leads to the conclusion that a person eating an anti-inflammatory diet will
convert a greater percentage of alpha linoleic acid to EPA than the person eating a pro-inflammatory diet.
Supplements which likely modulate immune system function include probiotics, vitamin D, zinc, and selenium. While all of these
supplements can boost immune system function, it is my understanding of the mechanism of action of each that these supplements will
likely normalize the immune response in an individual who is experiencing an overactive response.

Why We Do Not Get Sleepy from Sugar

When we are exercising our body is using the sugar in the blood to fuel our muscles.

There must be something in the process that supresses the release of insulin, since we are using the sugar.

If we eat sugar, the insulin is already being supressed, so we do not get a sugar crash.

This leaves the possibility of eating sugar during exercise creating high sugar in the blood, which is bad.

Why We Get Sleepy from Sugar

Am guessing about this entire process.

1. High-glycemic foods immediately turn into sugar in the stomach and get absorded directly into the blood stream without going into the intestines.

2. Sugar you are not using in the blood is bad, as I know from my diabetic ex-girlfriend. Too much sugar in the blood damages the capillaries leading to failure of everything.

3. Since sugar is bad, your body has to protect itself. If it detects a certain quantity of sugar in the blood it releases insulin to rush the sugar out of the blood into fat cells.

4. When you eat, your body releases insulin both for what it detects and for what it anticipates is coming.

5. Your body evolved before there was refined sugar. A small amount of refined sugar looks like a large amount of unrefined sugar. For example, one cookie might look like a lot of grapes. While the cookie releases all its sugar immediately. The grapes release the sugar over time. Your body thinks a lot more sugar is to come. So, it releases much more insulin than is needed for the one cookie.

6. The extra insulin removes all the sugar from your blood. You have a sugar crash and pass out, plus get fat.
<img width='1' height='1'
